Detailed description of Alpine Country Club

Alpine Country Club is a private 18-hole golf course located in Demarest, New Jersey.

Alpine Country Club first opened for play in 1928. The course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast. The original name of the course was ‘Aldecress.’ The name was derived from the three towns to which the course is connected: Alpine, Demarest and Cresskill. This course turned out to be his most challenging to build and is known as his “hidden gem”. Located on the Jersey Palisades, rock formations required blasting in order to shape the course to his perfection. In 1960, the course was sold to the membership and the name was changed.

Alpine plays to 6,711 yards from the back tees. Par for Alpine is 72. The course rating is 73 and the slope rating is 134.

The golf season extends from the beginning of March through mid-December.

An Article from the The Life and Times of A.W. Tillinghast, "The New Course of Aldecress (AlpineCC)". By H.E. Worden, October 1933

"Among the hundreds of golf courses that I have designed and constructed, Aldecress was by far the toughest course to build that I ever encountered. When we built the course at Aldecress, Bergen County of northern New Jersey, there came to my observation a relic of Revolutionary days. Close by the Aldecress course runs the old Closter Dock Road, and it was along this highway that General Howe led his British forces toward Trenton after crossing the Hudson. Evidently he must have tarried here for a while, at least sufficiently long to execute two patriots. On this lane, which leads to the first teeing ground of Aldecress, is the stone foundation of an old building. There had stood the Closter grist mill of the "patriot Miller Demarest." On the 11th of May, 1779, the mill was burned by Howe's troops and the miller's two sons, Cornelius and Hancomb, were shot by a firing squad.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6,682 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,471 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 7, a par-5 that plays to 598 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 5, a par-3 that plays to 136 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 6, a 436 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Alpine Country Club is # 16, a 191 yard par-3.

One of the great old northeast courses. Tough walk, very hill. Better hit the ball straight.
